The Shadow Over Innsmouth
Just a few comments regarding addendum:
The discarded draft of this excellent story has recently been reprinted as an Appendix in the fantastic one-volume omnibus of all of Lovecraft's fiction published by Barnes & Noble. The book, edited by S. T. Joshi, is called H. P. LOVECRAFT -- THE FICTION. The first edition is sold out, and it had a lot of mistakes that were the result of sloppy proof-reading. The second edition will have all of these corrected. The book is a handsome hardcover edition, over 1,000 pages, and it sells for an amazing $12.95!
"The Shadow over Innsmouth" is superbly read by Wayne June for Volume Two of THE DARK WORLDS OF H. P. LOVECRAFT series from Audio Realms. The reading is of the complete tale, unabridged, and it is fantastic.
For an amazing audio drama based on the story, THE H. P. LOVECRAFT HISTORICAL SOCIETY has released an old-time radio drama for their DARK ADVENTURE RADIO THEATRE series. This series is rad. The scripts are written and recorded as if they were from the 1930's, with cool sound effects and great acting. And each adventure comes with bonus handouts. For "The Shadow over Innsmouth" you get a postcard from the Newbury Port Historical Society shewing a replication of the Deep Ones gold tiara. You get a matchbook WITH ONE MATCH from the Gilman House Hotel. You get a realistic newspaper cutting from the New York Evening Graphic from February 27, 1928 in which there is a story about the bombing of Devil's Reef. AND -- you get a scratch 'n' sniff map of Innsmouth -- when you scratch a stained yellow mark the map reeks of Innsmouth FISH!!! The HPLHS is the same company that made that magnificent silent film version of THE CALL OF CTHULHU, and everything they do is a masterpiece.
This story has spawned a lot of sequels. Some of the best are located in THE INNSMOUTH CYCLE, edited by Robert M. Price for Chaosium, and there's the Del Rey trade paperback called SHADOWS OVER INNSMOUTH.
